Let it snow

So, uhm, it snowed today.

And yesterday.

And the day before

It has pretty much snowed every day since Wednesday, which is exciting for me. In Spain it only tends to snow up north, in the Pyrenees, and when it does snow in other regions the whole country stops functioning. Last year there was snow in in February or March, really random weather. It snowed for a day and pretty much everything stopped working. We did have snow, but nothing major... It melted in a couple of days, but even still schools closed, people were stranded on the motorway and cars were abandoned on the streets.

This past weekend I was at the Ouseburn Open Studios, volunteering at the Mushroom Works. On the last weekend of November, the studios on the Ouseburn Valley open their doors to the public, offering the opportunity to venture in and have a wonder round the artists' workplace, and to chat them. Not only that, but viewers can purchase pieces for an affordable price, take part in workshops and there's a bus that will drop you off right in front of the studios. I would have liked to go round to the other studios, maybe I'll go next year; yet I had a really good time at Mushroom Works. All the artists are very friendly, and I loved the quirkiness of some of them. I was surprised at how many people came round, the area isn't exactly in the city centre, but I suppose if you are interested in art and culture you will know what's going on during the year. People still managed to make it despite the ongoing snow,  I couldn't help but smile  every time the door opened and plump, padded figures waddled in covered in snow with red noses and cheeks.

I was assisting at the till, bagging the the 20x20 pieces that the studios offered, and was excited when I saw the amount of units some people bought. One guy bought 8 pieces on his own, he then paid for the other couple his partner chose, and they both came back the following day to buy a couple more. Most bought a couple or three. I saw many people stood in front of several works, with a knitted brow, trying to decide which on they liked best. I served a small family, each had chosen one or two to take home. The small boy was very excited about the skidding toy cars he had found, by Jim Edwards. When I have him the bag he took it carefully and took great care that he didn't knock it about. Can you tell I like people-watching?

I bought a couple of pieces myself. I will talk about them in my next post.

  3. Last year I found myself to be one of the few to make it into the office on snow days in London (I cycled!). I am paid by the day. I suspect these facts are related.
